[Linuxcantabria] crear interfaz wlan

Hola!

estoy intentando instalar mi ipw2200 en mi debian linux 2.6.12, y
después de mucho dar vueltas, lo he conseguido.... Estoy siguiendo
http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/README.ipw2200, pero el tema es q no me
crea la interfaz:

Sigo mirando en el manual y veo:
  ifname
	Rename the wireless network interface. It is not supported now.
	This parameter was a hack pre-dating the ifrename utility and
	has now been superseded by it. The ifrename utility can be found
	in the wireless-tool package. Following is an example to change
	the default name of wireless interface eth%d to wlan%d.

	create (or edit) /etc/iftab so that it has such line:
	wlan*	driver	ipw2200

	then modified /etc/modprobe.conf and added this line:
	install ipw2200 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ipw2200; /usr/sbin/ifrename

	Please refer to the manpage of ifrename for details.

Y... ¡no existe el comando!

wireless-tools ya está en su versión más reciente.

Ya no sé qué hacer, empiezo a desesperarme... ¿Alguien puede ayudarme?
¿la Ubuntu pilla esta tarjeta y la configura solita? Es que estoy
empezando a pensar seriamente en pasarme...
